Today in Herons and Kestrels, we had an author called Richard O’Neill join us on a Teams meeting and he told us what it was like to live a Romani lifestyle.
He grew up travelling around in his family’s caravan and learnt how to do woodwork. Richard goes round to different schools teaching woodwork and shares, develops and helps children write stories. One day he was teaching some children to do some woodwork and there was four boys but only one girl. He told them only use your elbow. The first one was a boy he hit the nail flat. The next boy did the same. All the boys failed because they rushed and didn’t listen but the girl was patient and waited and she nailed the nail in perfectly while the boys just stood there looking at her unable to understand how he did it.
He also told us lots of stories from when he was a child. One of which was how the October half term was potato picking week. They were told there was a king potato in the field and whoever found this giant potato he would double their pay for that day. He and his brother were so determined to find it that they snuck in at night to start digging. They did not find it but they did find a bomb which then the next day the only way to remove it was too explode it. They were showered in mud and mashed potato that day!
We were then able to ask Richard questions about his life and his stories and it was really fascinating.

On Thursday Mrs Philpott took 10 children from Years 4, 5 and 6 to a fabulous sports festival in Winchester where they had the opportunity to try out a range of different and wonderful sports.
Our first session was target games where we tried our hand at bowling, target football, archery and nerf wars before moving on to our second session which was frisbee games. We learnt the rules of ultimate frisbee and played some intense invasion games against other schools then played some great fun rounds of frisbee golf. Our afternoon session kicked off with 'create a game' where the team were presented with a bag of equipment which they had to use to make up a game or activity for other schools to then play. They explained their games and rules extremely clearly and confidently and the other schools loved playing them so much so, that the judges deemed them the winners and awarded them the whole bag of equipment to bring back to school (cheers all round about how happy Mrs Robinson would be!). Our final session was Quidditch where we played mini games with the quaffle, bludger and golden snitch before bringing them all together into one final game. Great fun! I couldn't have been more proud of all the children - from their behaviour, to the constant effort they put into all their activities. It was a fabulous day.
On Friday 14th June 4 lovely Year 2 children rushed off to take part in the inter schools Year 2 cross country race at Froxfield. Organised by Froxfield, East Meon, Langrish, Froxfield, Buriton and SHeet all raced together in a girls race and a boys race. The course was twice around the playing fields next to the school in Froxfield.
We could not be more proud of our amazing runners, although they did not come home with a medal or a cup each and every one of them run their hardest and really enjoyed the race.
Once again - we celebrated all things 'fathers' at our annual Father's Day Lunch at school this week. A record amount of dads joined their infant children for lunch and the children and dads loved it!

Congratulations to the swimmers this term in Herons and Kestrels who have completed this year’s swimming lessons at the Open Air Pool. Fabulous behaviour, listening and learning. So much progress was made by them all - we are all very proud of how hard they worked. The sun shone for nearly all of their lessons this term and the teachers made a point of letting us know how much of a pleasure it was to teach them. Keep going with those lessons at home if you can, being confident and able in water is an extremely important skill to have in life.
Tuesday 4 June - Rounders at Bohunt
A valiant effort from our girls football team this morning. We made a cracking start with no goals being conceded in our first 3 Games. We played Medstead where Grace and Maita scored 1 goal each and Martha scored 2. Against East Meon Martha scored 3 and Grace scored 1 and Martha 2. In the semi final, w played Froxfield and despite huge efforts we lost 1-0. A great team of girls. Special thanks to Mrs Mifsud who coached the team at school and on the day. A great morning and although disappointed the girls have left in good spirits.
