Kestrels Geography trip to Dell Quay

Kestrels Class visit Dell Quay on our geography trip to learn about rivers - by Jenny and Alice
We arrived in Fishbourne and started the walk to Dell Quay passing a pond full of baby swans. We talked about the harbour and how the river and oceans meet and the source of the mouth of the river. We stood in some reed beds as this was as close as we could get to the river mouth, and listened to the birds. Then we went down to a small river, where we split into year 5 & 6. to do our activities. We learnt about how when a small river joins into a bigger river it is called a tributary, the rocks at the bottom of the river are called sediment and a bend in the river is called a meander. Firstly, year 5 went to stand in the river and measure depth and length, and year 6s, did a sketch of the river, learning all the names of the various parts, and then we played Pooh sticks and then we swapped.
We finished our activities and carried on with our walk to the education centre where we learnt more about rivers. It was a great trip!
