End of Year One Expectations for

Reading

 

• I know my phase 5 phonics.

• I can identify which common and frequent words, such as that, was, said, etc.

• I can relate reading to own experiences.

• I know when reading does not make sense.

• I can retell stories with considerable accuracy.

• I can discuss significance of title & events.

• I can make predictions on basis of what has

been read.

• I can make inferences on basis of what is being

said  and done.

• I can read with pace & expression, i.e. pause

at full stop; raise voice for question

• I know the difference between fiction and non

-fiction texts.

 

 

 

End of Year One Expectations for

Writing

 

• I can write sentences with a capital letter and full stop.

• I can use ‘and’ to join ideas.

• I can use conjunctions to join sentences (e.g.

so, but).

• I can use standard forms of verbs, e.g. go/went.

• I have evidence of:

• Capital letters.

• Full stops.

• Question marks.

• Exclamation marks.

•I use capital letters for names and personal

pronoun ‘I’.

• I can write clearly sequenced sentences.

• I can use the correct formation for lower case letters and finish in right place.

  • I can use the correct formation for capital letters.

• I can use the correct formation for digits.

 

 

End of Year 2 Expectations for

Writing

 

 

• I can write different kinds of sentences:

statement, question, exclamation,

command.

• I can use expanded noun phrases to add

description & specification.

• I can write using subordination (when, if, that,

because).

• I can correctly and consistently use the present tense

and past tense.

• I can correctly use verb tenses.

• I can correctly and consistently use:

O Capital letters.

O Full stops.

O Question marks.

O Exclamation marks.

O Commas in a list.

O Apostrophe (omission).

O Introduction of speech marks.

• I can write under headings

• I can show evidence of diagonal & horizontal strokes

to join handwriting.

 

 

End of Year 2 Expectations for

Reading

 

• I know all my phase 6 phonics

• I can read ahead to help with fluency  and expression.

• I can comments on plot, setting & characters in familiar & unfamiliar stories.

• I can recount main themes and events.

• I can comment on the structure of the text.

• I can use commas, question marks  and exclamation marks to vary expression.

• I can read aloud with expression & intonation.

• I can recognise:

O speech marks

O contractions

• I can identify the past/present tense.

• I can use the content and index pages to locate

information.
