Spring 3                                                   19 January 2024

Dear Parents/Carers

Our wonderful annual singing event took place this week, see article below. We will celebrate the singing and the children next week in our celebration assembly. Suffice to say, the children were a credit to you all and we are very proud of them. We will try to make this date a Thursday if at all possible going forward to help with the efforts of an incredibly long day. If you fancy joining next year (juniors) please be sure that your child can cope with this day and that there is no unauthorised absence the day after.

This week we also sent Wilfred, Abby, William and Grace to a super art morning at Bedales. A fabulous opportunity to use the wonderful facilities at Bedales.

Library books - we have a brilliant library as you know, run by parent volunteers, however we are starting to lose quite a few books! There are over 100 overdue now, which is a colossal amount. Have a look for any books that belong to the school over the weekend and send them in on Monday if they are overdue or you have finished with them. Stocking the library was an expensive business and it is a shame to lower the selection for future years.

Next Monday our new R-Y6 Spanish Club starts, we currently have 7 children signed up so lots of spaces available. There are also a lot of spaces available for Y1/2 basketball lesson at Bohunt on Tuesday afternoon after school as part of our sports partnership with Bohunt. Sign up ASAP if you would now like your child to attend by emailing the office.

We begin our new singing event now: The Petersfield Music Festival' we have been sending year 5s to this for many years now and again, another fabulous music event to stretch and challenge our singers. I have started rehearsing with them and we have our first group rehearsal at Churchers College along with the other schools on Wednesday morning. Children need to come into school as normal and will be walked to Churchers. Water bottle and snack please.

I think that's about all for this week. Have a wonderful weekend whatever you're up to.

Year One is taking part in the Five to Twelve study

Pupils from our school have been selected to take part in the new Five to Twelve study!

Five to Twelve is a new national study involving around 8,000 children attending primary school in the 2020s and their families. The study will explore how children are getting on in a range of areas in the post-pandemic context. By following children and their families over time, the study aims to provide a contemporary understanding of how children’s environments and experiences impact on their future education and wellbeing outcomes.

For the first stage of the study, the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), which is delivering the study on behalf of DfE, will be sending letters to the parents or carers of the selected children at their home address in October 2023. The information posted to families will list the various ways they can get in touch with the study team, should they have questions about participating or opting out.

If invited parents and carers have any questions, you can visit the study website at fivetotwelve.org.uk, or get in touch with the study team at FivetoTwelve@natcen.ac.uk or on Freephone 0800 652 4568.

Attendance

Really low attendance today as you can see. There are lots of coughs and chest infections going around at the moment. As a reminder, the government has set a target of 95% attendance for all pupils. This rate allows for periods of illness or particular circumstances when absence from school is unavoidable.

We must continue to make sure our children are in school every day.

Thank you!

What are the benefits and risks of AI?

Like any digital tool, artificial intelligence offers both benefits and risks.

Potential benefits of AI tools

Ademolawa Ibrahim Ajibade says that generative AI (Gen-AI) systems and chat-bots are remarkable tools that can:

  • Enhance learning experiences such as assisted-learning across diverse topics including science, tech, poetry, music and arts
  • Provide instant answers to burning questions
  • Engage children in fun conversations
  • Improve critical thinking skills.

More than just a fancy chatbot, AI opens up a new world of possibilities for kids’ learning, creativity and problem-solving.

Additionally, Ilona Brannen says “the real special magic” of AI comes from children’s creations and sense of style. “If you compare, for example, Roald Dahl to Charles Dickens, [you’ll find] very different writing styles unique to that particular author. Help your children explore what makes their style unique to help them develop their own approach and perspective on things.”

See how you can use different AI tools with your child.

Possible risks of artificial intelligence

A common concern with AI is that children will rely too much on it. “It’s important to teach your children or students that this is a tool,” says Ilona Brannen, “and it’s only going to be as good as what you use it for.”

“AI technology is capable of simulating the voice of a person, as well as creating images from ideas,” says Andy Robertson. “This means it’s important for children to (more than ever) not trust everything they read online. Or, perhaps more importantly, every message they get on social media.”
