Autumn 8                                               25 October 2024

Hello everyone,

What a fantastic week we've had at Sheet Primary School! It's been absolutely buzzing with activity, and I'm thrilled to share all the exciting happenings with you.

Let's kick off with a big round of applause for our amazing group of parents and pupils who ran the Great South Run last weekend. Talk about dedication! They've raised an incredible sum for our school - we're looking at over £1,000 in sponsorship. Isn't that brilliant? A massive thank you to everyone who took part and supported this fantastic effort.

Our Harvest Festival was a real treat, wasn't it? The church was filled with beautiful music and the voices of our talented pupils. I have to give a special shout-out to Dino - what an incredible performance on the organ! It's moments like these that remind us of the incredible talent we have here at Sheet Primary. And let's not forget the delicious soup prepared by The Kestrel class to round off the service. Yum!

This week has been a hive of activity with each class busy creating Christmas cards. Yes, I know it might seem a bit early, but trust me, these little masterpieces take time! Please remember to bring your child's original Xmas artwork back into school on the first day back after half term as they will need to be sent off to create the orders.

Today was our Halloween-inspired dress-up day, and oh my, what a sight to behold! The effort that went into the costumes was simply amazing. It's clear we have some very creative parents (and pupils) in our midst. But the fun won’t stop there - we also have our sponsored run on the running track at 3:15 pm. Once again, our pupils have shown their enthusiasm and community spirit by raising what looks to be over £1,000. We're on a fundraising roll!

I'd like to give a special mention to our top fundraisers. In first place, we have Archie from Herons class, who raised an impressive £115. Hot on his heels was Emilia from Robins with £95, and Sam from Herons with £90. What an achievement! You've all done us proud.

It's been such a positive way to finish the first half of the school term. But don't think the excitement stops here - we've got plenty to look forward to after the break.

When we return, we'll be welcoming back the Y1-Y6 Spanish Club on Mondays. It's fantastic to see this popular club making a comeback! We're also introducing a new Y3-Y6 Basketball Club on Fridays. These will be running alongside our existing clubs, so there's something for everyone.

Don't forget to buy some books for Christmas and help raise funds for the school with the Scholastic Book Fair coming to school on Tues-Fri after school.

We've got a busy schedule of parent tours coming up for those looking at September 2025 start dates. It's always a pleasure to show off our wonderful school to prospective parents and pupils.

And let's not forget our upcoming fireworks event on Saturday, 9th November. Our brilliant FOSS team has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to make this the best one yet. Make sure you book your tickets - you won't want to miss it!

Now, I have a small favour to ask. We've accumulated quite a pile of rubbish in the car park that needs to go to the local tip. If anyone could book a trip and help us clear it, we'd be ever so grateful. It's these little acts of community support that make our school so special. You are welcome to come in and get it over the holidays.

When we return, we'll be launching the Poppy Appeal; slap bands, bracelets and, of course, poppies are available for a donation to the Poppy Appeal and Year 6s will be on the playground before and after school. We'll also be starting our run-up to Christmas. Can you believe it? The year has flown by, but there's still so much to look forward to.

Before I sign off, I just want to say how proud I am of everything we've achieved this half-term. From fundraising efforts to musical performances, from Halloween fun to Christmas preparations - you've all shown what makes Sheet Primary such a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Have a lovely half-term break, everyone. Rest, recharge, and come back ready for more adventures. We've got an exciting few weeks ahead of us!

As we head off into the HALF-TERM holidays

Support your child to learn how they can look after themself. Try to create a positive environment.

Instead of just making rules, talk with your child about online safety. Make sure they feel involved in decisions and know that you’re there to chat if they’re worried.

Empower them with information

Make sure they know how to block and report someone. Let them know what behaviours are unacceptable or illegal.

Support their mental wellbeing

Find ways to help build their resilience and self-esteem. This will put them in a good position to handle difficult situations.

Encourage openness

Even if your child doesn’t choose to come to you about what they see online, you can encourage them to talk to someone. Let them know you are there if they want to talk but they can also talk to other trusted adults like a teacher, sports coach or family friend. They could also talk to their friends about how they deal with what they see online.

Show that you trust them

Agree with your child which sites and games they can access and allow them to use them. Tell them you’re happy they use these sites if they know what to do if there is a problem.

Teach them about consent

Talk to them about healthy relationships and consent, and how to say “no”. This is as important online as it is offline. Read our advice for talking to teenagers about consent and talking to younger children about consent.

Try the ‘billboard test’

Encourage them to think about what they share online. Ask them to imagine that everything they put onto social media and chats shows up on a billboard. This includes pictures, comments and personal information. How would they feel? Would they change what they post?
