Autumn 12                                         6 December 2024

Hello everyone,

It's hard to believe we're already in December, isn't it? The school is buzzing with excitement as we approach the festive season, and I'm excited to share some updates with you all.

First off, I wanted to say a warm Sheet welcome to Mr Wyman (Maisie's dad) who applied to be a parent governor last week and was duly elected. Welcome to the team Charlie good to have you on board!

We had the lovely Mrs Glanville's birthday this week.

Also, I want to give a big shout-out to our Young Voices choir. They've been practising their hearts out for the upcoming concert in January. Keep up the fantastic work, everyone, and continue over the holidays!

I'm pleased to report that our nasal flu vaccinations went smoothly. It's always a relief when these important health initiatives are carried out without a hitch.

We had a special visit from Shine Radio recently. They came in to interview our pupils and staff about Christmas at Sheet. It was wonderful to hear our school community sharing their thoughts and experiences. Who knows, we might have some budding radio stars in our midst!

A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all who've contributed to our mini Christmas fair preparations. Whether it's for the tombola, the Year 6 stall or a gift for the reverse calendar, every single gift makes a difference. Your generosity is warming to see.

Excitement is building for our Infant performance of 'Cinderella'. We've set the stage, and the show will start next week. Buy your tickets for Tuesday 10th December at 2pm and 4pm, and Wednesday 11th December at 2pm and 4pm. Remember, children will stay at school between performances, but there's no provision for siblings. Don't forget to pack a hearty snack for your little performers to enjoy between the 3.15pm finish and pick up at 5pm.

Now, hold onto your Santa hats because we've got something special coming up! Next Friday,  Friday 13th December from 3.15-4.30, we're hosting a Santa Fun Run and Mini Fair. We're taking our daily mile to a whole new level - all the way to Lapland! We're challenging the kids to run 11 laps dressed as Santa or his helpers. For just £3, your child will get a Santa hat and a prize for completing the laps.

After the run, we'll have a mini fair with mince pies, mulled wine, and treats/stalls for the children so please bring some pennies and pounds!

Even if you can't make it to the fun run or mini fair, all pupils are invited to come to school in sports mufti that day. Just bring in £1 and give it to your class teacher as usual. You can buy tickets for the Santa Fun Run and sign up to help on Classlist. Every bit of support makes a difference! All money raised will go towards the FOSS school funds. Don't forget about the Christmas shop too!

As always, I'm incredibly proud of our Sheet Primary community. Your enthusiasm, support, and involvement make our school a truly special place. Here's to a fantastic festive season ahead bring on the performances, the mince pies and the chocolate I say!!

Internet Safety

Look out for this on Channel 4.

Channel 4 has commissioned Swiped: The School that Banned Smartphones, a landmark two-part documentary series, produced by BOLDPRINT Studios, which will tackle the timely issue of the impact of smartphones on children’s behaviour with a pioneering social experiment.

The urgency of this issue cannot be overstated. 50% of all 9-year-olds in the UK own a smartphone with 43% of UK teens using their smartphones during school lessons.  Alarmingly, frequent social media use has been found to increase a child’s risk of depression by 27% and a recent Education Select Committee report revealed that one in four children now use their phones in a manner resembling behavioural addiction. Even more concerning, half of children have accessed violent pornography on a screen by the age of 13 and 21% of 9 – 12-year-olds agree that it is normal for children their age to share nude or semi-nude images online.

As part of Hampshire County Council’s commitment to improve accessibility and enable more people to walk and cycle for short journeys, you are invited help us identify where there are barriers to walking and cycling on your local streets. We are particularly keen to hear from people who use mobility aids (including mobility scooters), pushchairs or buggies, people who use cargo bikes and trailers, or other adapted cycles.

The survey is live from noon on Monday 28 October and will close at 11:59pm on Sunday 22 December.
