Spring 5                                                 7 February 2025

Hello everyone,

What a fantastic week we've had at Sheet Primary School!

First off: our incredible trip to the Young Voices concert at the O2 Arena on Monday. Mrs Hines, Mrs Burford, and I had an absolute blast with our 19 amazing choir members. These talented pupils sang their hearts out, danced like champions, and behaved impeccably. It was a joy to see them shine on such a big stage! This annual trip has become one of the number one highlights for many children in their time at Sheet! (see photos and write up).

Now, I know many of you have been eagerly waiting for news about our teacher interviews. Well, I'm happy to say we've wrapped them up, and we had a strong amount of interest (naturally!). I feel confident we've chosen the right person for the job. I'll be able to share more details next week once all the necessary paperwork has been completed and double-checked.

This week, I had a great meeting with our local PCSO Tanya Manns and PC Loz Bourne. They're keen to strengthen the working relationships between schools and the police force. We're looking forward to building on our trust and confidence, creating an effective partnership that'll benefit our whole school community.

Our staff have been busy bees too! Mrs Beenham has been on Forest Schools training for the past three days, soaking up all sorts of outdoor learning goodness. Mrs Child attended the annual SENCo conference, bringing back valuable insights for our special educational needs provision. And Miss Buxey has been sharpening her skills at a maths course. It's wonderful to see our team constantly growing and learning!

Looking ahead to next week, we've got loads going on. The EARA (Equality And Rights Advocates) group from Kestrels class will be presenting an assembly to the rest of the school. I can't wait to hear what these thoughtful pupils have to share with us all.

We're also getting musical again! Mr Blunt from Bedales will be popping in to help me and the Year 5 choir practise songs for The Petersfield Festival. Speaking of music, I'm afraid we'll be saying goodbye to Dr Stasiak from Hampshire Music Service. His last lessons with us will be on Thursday, and we'll miss his musical expertise.

Don't forget, Safer Internet Day is coming up on February 11th. We're hosting an ‘Internet Safety’ presentation for parents at 7pm - be sure to save the date! It's so important that we work together to keep our children safe online. This year the focus is smartphones.

For our sporty pupils, we've got a tag rugby tournament at Bohunt for Years 5 and 6. If you haven't signed up yet, please do! And from Wednesday to Friday, Bikeability will be in school for the Year 5s' annual bike riding safety training. Safety first, always! Please wear your PE kit into school with trainers and a warm coat and gloves - it will be happening whatever the weather - and don't forget your bike and helmet, bikes can be left at school between lessons.

Kestrels class are getting into the Valentine's spirit with a 'Valentines Cake' sale on Thursday, February 13th. Please send your Kestrel child in with cakes, if they are homemade we need to have a full list of the ingredients (Natasha’s Law). Every child needs 50p on the day if they'd like to join in the fun. The proceeds will be spent on the classroom with children having a fair say in what will be purchased.

Nearly finally, Year 6 pupils are in for a treat! They're off to the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth to see 'School of Rock'. I hear we might even spot some ex-pupils in the cast - how exciting!

Finally, I need to address a serious matter. We've received another concerning email about negative texting between parents about other pupils. Please, let's nip this in the bud. Our school community is built on kindness and respect, and that extends to how we communicate towards each other inside and outside school, face to face or online.

Phew! That's all from me for now. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, my door is always open. Have a fantastic week, everyone!

Young Voices at the O2
This is what our Young Voices had to say about the event: 'After we got off the bus, we went to find our seats in the O2 arena. We rehearsed with the other schools for a few hours. Then we had our lunch and a break for 2 hours while the parents came in. Finally we did the concert an...

Spring into Action

We are pleased to be supporting Hampshire’s Spring into Action Week 2025!

The event runs from Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th March.

The Spring into Action Toolkit will be shared with families and is also available at:

myjourneyhampshire.com/springintoaction

The toolkit provides fun activities to enjoy throughout the week. The activities can be tried during your daily walk, wheel, scoot or cycle to and from school, during an outdoor activity or in your leisure time.

This year’s theme is the weather, with ideas to help us engage with nature and think about how being out in all weather can benefit our health and wellbeing. The toolkit also provides a fantastic opportunity for families to spend time talking and having fun together.

Attendance

Really good attendance this week. I would now like to work on Fridays being as strong as the other days!

The Anxious Generation .....

Chapter 3 of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt focuses on the psychological and cultural shifts that have contributed to the rise of anxiety among young people, particularly those in Generation Z. Haidt argues that the growth of anxiety can be traced back to a combination of factors, including changes in parenting, the widespread use of social media, and the cultural atmosphere that prioritizes safety and comfort over resilience and independence.

Key points of the chapter include:

  1. Helicopter Parenting: Haidt highlights the rise of "helicopter parenting," where parents became more involved and protective, reducing opportunities for children to learn how to navigate challenges on their own. This lack of independence and overprotection may have contributed to the rise in anxiety.

  2. Social Media Impact: The explosion of social media, particularly Instagram and Snapchat, has had a significant impact on the mental health of young people. Haidt discusses how the constant comparisons and pressures to maintain a curated online persona exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and anxiety.

  3. Cultural Shifts: The chapter discusses how the cultural emphasis on individual safety, both physical and emotional, has led to the decline of "dangerous" but important experiences that promote emotional resilience. Schools, for example, have become safer but also more restrictive, preventing kids from engaging in activities that might teach them how to deal with failure or adversity.

  4. The Rise of Victimhood Culture: Haidt introduces the concept of "victimhood culture," where individuals are encouraged to see themselves as victims of harm or injustice. This mentality, while well-meaning in some contexts, can contribute to a mindset that focuses on vulnerabilities instead of personal strengths, further increasing anxiety.

In this chapter, Haidt aims to show how the societal and cultural changes over the last few decades have shaped a generation that is more anxious, less resilient, and more dependent on others for emotional support.

Ideas for half term....
