Spring 7                                                 28 February 2025

Wow, what an incredible couple of weeks we've had at Sheet Primary School! I am, as always, excited to share all the wonderful things that have been happening in our school community.

First and foremost, I'm over the moon to announce that we've received the final Ofsted report, and it's simply fantastic! I hope you've had a chance to take a look at it. The inspectors truly understood what makes our school so special, and their observations shine through in every word of the report. As your headteacher, I couldn't be more proud of the genuine enthusiasm, strong sense of belonging, and highly welcoming atmosphere that they recognised in our school. It's everything we could have hoped for and more! see report

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to every single member of our incredible team who made this visit such a resounding success. As the saying goes, "The strength of the team is each individual member, and the strength of each member is the team." We truly embodied this spirit during the inspection, and it shows in the results. To celebrate this achievement, I'll be discussing with the school what special 'treat' we can plan. We've certainly earned it!

Now, let's look at the exciting happenings of the past couple of weeks. I hope you all had a wonderful half term break and came back refreshed and ready for more adventures.

We've had the absolute pleasure of welcoming back Evie Reah, our former head girl, who's been with us for work experience as part of her college course. She's done a brilliant job, and it's been lovely to see her growth since her time as a pupil here.

Our Kingfishers have spread their wings and flew off to Windsor Castle for an exciting trip. They have certainly come back with heads full of history and hearts full of wonder. See photos of their day below.

We've also welcomed a new SCITT student, Miss Morris, who's joined us in Kestrels for a six-week placement. It's always refreshing to have new faces and perspectives in our classrooms and we are sure she will enjoy her time here.

Looking ahead, we've got a jam-packed week coming up that's sure to keep us all on our toes! On Monday, we're kicking off our engineering competition once again. We're thrilled to have engineer 'Alexander Eichhorn' visiting to inspire our budding inventors as they design their creations. We've had great success in these competitions in the past, and I'm confident our clever pupils will shine once more.

On Tuesday at 2.45pm it's the annual school pancake race, please join us!  The year 5s will unfortunately miss it this year (as will I) as they will be at TPS for the Petersfield Music rehearsals.  They will need picking up from TPS at 4 pm.

Music will be in the air as Mr Blunt from Bedales joins us to help prepare our Year 5 singers for the Petersfield Music Festival and the practise at TPS. Speaking of Bedales, six of our lucky pupils will be attending their art morning next week– I can't wait to see what masterpieces they create!

Of course, we can't forget World Book Day! Dress up (try to recycle or borrow an outft), bring a book for our book swap wrapped in newspaper with age rating marked. We will put a rail in the playground this afternoon for recycled outfits so please bring any this afternoon if you have any to spare. The assembly for parents is now cancelled so no need to come in, however cocoa and bedtime stories in the classes will be going ahead at 5 pm - come back in your PJ's, with blankets, pillows, squishy toys.

Our Herons will be spreading their wings too, as they set off for their class trip to The Living Rainforest. I'm sure they'll return with fascinating facts about the wonders of nature to complement their learning.

And to cap off this whirlwind week, we've got the FOSS quiz and pudding auction event back at school on Friday - see the FOSS flyer to book. It promises to be a fun-filled evening of friendly competition and delicious treats.

Finally, we have news about the new teacher who will be starting after Easter, her name is Miss Leney (pronounced Leany) and she will be coming in for a couple of days in March and attending part of the parents evenings for Kingfishers. She comes to us with fabulous references and I am sure she will complement the team although very fine shoes to step into when Mrs Child leaves.

Phew! It's going to be a busy week, but I wouldn't have it any other way. The energy and enthusiasm of our pupils, staff, and wider school community never cease to amaze me. Here's to another fantastic week at Sheet Primary School!

PS:

Don't forget to get your entries in for the Henry Adams 'Design a Book Character' competition - closing date is Wednesday 5th March.  Great Lego prizes to be won!

PPS:

Parents evenings have a slight change as Mrs Hines wanted to see Year 6 earlier:

Parents evening Tuesday 18th March 1pm - Year 6 ONLY

Parents evening 1st and 2nd April rest of year groups, year 5 only 1st Aprl.

Internet Safety Chapters 6 & 7 The Anxious Generation

Chapter 6: Social Media and the Pressure to Perform

In Chapter 6, The Anxious Generation delves into the influence of social media on mental health, particularly anxiety. The chapter discusses how social media platforms, like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, create a space for individuals to constantly curate and perform their lives. This curated online presence, often designed to present an idealised version of oneself, can lead to feelings of inadequacy and the fear of missing out (FOMO). The chapter explores the psychological consequences of this, particularly the increasing pressure on young people to gain validation through likes and comments. This social comparison often exacerbates anxiety, as people compare their behind-the-scenes with others' highlight reels.

Chapter 7: The Rise of Anxiety and Mental Health Awareness

Chapter 7 shifts focus to the increasing awareness of mental health issues in society, particularly anxiety, among younger generations. The chapter looks at how anxiety has become one of the most prevalent mental health concerns among young people and the ways in which the stigma surrounding mental health has slowly diminished. Despite this progress, the chapter emphasises that the rise in awareness is not always accompanied by effective solutions, and many individuals continue to struggle with finding adequate support. It also highlights how the normalisation of anxiety in pop culture and social media can sometimes result in trivialising or oversimplifying mental health issues. The chapter suggests that while awareness is a step in the right direction, deeper structural changes are needed to truly address the root causes of mental health struggles in today's generation.

Safer Phones Bill - a word from Smartphone free childhood...

Monday 10th March 8pm - Sheet School Smartphone Free Childhood presentation..please come!

Next Friday March 7th, MPs will debate the Safer Phones Bill in Parliament. And if too few turn up, the Bill could fizzle out.

Word on the street is the government is really listening, and everything’s to play for.
You’ve helped make that happen.
Because of this movement — because of you — they’re finally considering taking action.
Now we need to get MPs in the room to get this done.
So we’re asking for you to email your MP to remind them to attend (they can read the final Bill when it’s published before the debate).

We’ve drafted the email for you already so it only takes a minute, but that minute could make a lifetime of difference for a generation of kids.
