Spring 12                                                        3 April 2025

Hello everyone!

First off, I want to extend a big thank you to all our parents who attended the recent parent evenings. Your involvement in your child's education is invaluable, and these meetings are a fantastic opportunity for us to work together to support our pupils' growth and development.

Speaking of growth, our Herons have been spreading their musical wings! We were treated to a marvellous concert showcasing their newly acquired cornet skills. It was wonderful to see so many parents in attendance, supporting their budding musicians. Your encouragement means the world to these young performers. African drumming is up next on our musical journey. I can't wait to hear the rhythmic beats echoing through our halls!

Easter brought its own share of fun and excitement. Our Easter egg hunt was a huge success, with children eagerly searching high and low for hidden treasures. The joy on their faces was truly priceless!

We also had a special treat that was the cherry on top of our term - or should I say, the ice cream on top? The ice cream van visit was a delightful surprise for everyone and what a beautiful day for it to arrive!

However, amidst the end of term celebrations, we also had to say a bittersweet farewell to our lovely Mrs Childs. Her warmth, dedication, and passion for teaching have left an indelible mark on our school community. We'll miss her dearly but wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

Looking ahead, we have an inset day tomorrow. While the pupils enjoy an extra day of holiday, our staff will be busy with training focused on supporting children and enhancing our subject leadership skills. It's all part of our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible education for your children.

As we wrap up this term, I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the sun continues to shine, giving us plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun and relaxation.

We'll be back in action on Tuesday, 22nd April, ready to kick off our summer term with renewed energy and excitement. I'm looking forward to all the adventures and learning experiences that await us in the summer term!

Until then, enjoy your time with family and friends. See you all soon!

Head

PS: If you are a junior parent and you haven't confirmed your place at the Peter Pan theatre visit on the first week back, please do so now. We are buying tickets on Tuesday and will only buy for those who have said they would like to come. So please don't disappoint your child by forgetting to do it. We cannot buy extra tickets - just in case.

News from the Library

Spring has finally sprung! ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŒท

This week we talked about the weather in Spring, especially the clouds. The younger pupils were shown how to make a cloud spotter and encouraged to look at different clouds in encyclopaedias and weather books over the holidays, at home or in the local library.

Robins had to search for the hidden ducks and weather toys in the library and listened to a story all about a mummy duck and her duckling.

Happy Easter from Mrs Wilby!๐ŸŒธ

School Dinners

The current menu for the summer term carries on after Easter except we will have a new picnic menu instead of the pasta menu - see below - which can be taken outside to eat on warm days.

Also, after Easter, the school will be recycling all our food waste.  There will be a new bin in the playground for food waste only, together with one in the hall, kitchen and staff room.

To aid this, children who bring in a packed lunch will not be allowed to throw away any leftover food or packaging from their lunch boxes but will bring it home each day.  This is to make sure we don't contaminate the food waste bins with plastic/wrappers etc.

Thank you for your support!

Internet Safety

It's easy to get caught up on all the bad things we need to protect kids from that smartphones make so much worse. Harmful content, toxic ideologies, cyberbullying, grooming and all the rest.

But we don't hear enough about what kids are gaining when they get a few more years to learn and grow away from addictive algorithms.

This is arguably our most important message of all โ€“ waiting a few more years to give kids smartphones isn't just protecting them from harm; itโ€™s giving them secret superpowers! ๐Ÿฆธ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’ฅ

The average 12-15 year-old in the UK now spends 35 hours a week on their smartphone, according to a 2025 Uni of Birmingham study. If theyโ€™re smartphone-free, they have equivalent to a full time job of extra time to play, chat, mess about and explore the world IRL.

Kids without smartphones arenโ€™t influenced by toxic social media pressures or digital validation. They have space to explore who they really are, free from the constant stress of online likes and status.

Without a smartphone acting as a middleman, kids focus on socialising IRL. Relationships are built on real human connection, and strengthening these essential life skills enables them to forge deeper friendships.

Teens who are addicted to their smartphones are 2x as likely to have anxiety and 3x as likely to have depression, according to a study by Kings College London. The less time they spend online and the more time they spend with friends and family in the real world, the better their overall wellbeing.

Being tech-savvy isnโ€™t about getting good at TikTok โ€“ itโ€™s about knowing how to use technology productively. The less time spent passively scrolling, the more time they have to develop the critical thinking, focus, and creative problem solving that will set them up for success in an AI-fuelled future.

Without the constant distraction of a smartphone, kids can fully engage in learning and schoolwork. They can develop their interests free from addictive algorithms, which results in better concentration and grades.

Teenagers need 8-10 hours per night to support their physical and mental development. Kids without smartphones get longer and deeper sleep which results in improved brain function and emotional regulation.
