Summer 7                                                     13 June 2025

Dear Parents,

What a hugely busy time we've had at Sheet Primary! There's so much to share with you all:

First, congratulations to all our pupils who will be taking part in the Y5/6 swimming gala this year- if your child is taking part, you'll have received an email with all the details. We're so proud of them!

Speaking of achievements, we've had some important assessments taking place. Our Year 4 pupils have been tackling their multiplication tables tests, while Year 1 have been working hard on their phonics tests. Meanwhile, our Year 6 pupils have been involved in writing moderation - they've been brilliant throughout.

Sports day was absolutely fantastic! The atmosphere was electric, and every single pupil gave their best effort. It's moments like these that really show what makes our school community so special. A very special thank you to Miss Buxey who worked so hard to make it all happen.

Our EARA representatives had an important meeting at Langrish recently. These Equality and Rights Advocates continue to do amazing work, and I'm so proud of their commitment to making our school an inclusive place for everyone.

We had a lovely visit from The Petersfield School, with Callie and Bea N coming in to present to our current Year 6 pupils. It's always wonderful when our secondary colleagues visit - it helps make that transition feel less daunting and more exciting.

Edison and family, travelled  to Southampton to claim his winners' prizes for the Engineers award in the South East. What an incredible achievement! We're absolutely thrilled for him.

The Fathers' Day lunches were a huge success - it was lovely to see so many dads, grandads, and father figures joining us for lunch. The smiles on everyone's faces said it all.

We also held our new parents' induction evening, welcoming families who'll be joining us. It's always exciting to meet new families and share what makes Sheet Primary so special.

Looking ahead to next week, please make sure your child has a hat, water bottle  and plenty of named suncream with them. If it gets very hot, we'll limit midday sun exposure to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

We have at least 7 children going to the Y3/4 rounders tournament on Tuesday, parents to collect at 3.05pm.

The Herons will return to their normal swimming lessons, and our transition programme for new recruits starts on Tuesday. It should be a slightly less busy week (she says!).

Before I finish, I must mention that it's the lovely Mrs Arend's and the lovely Misss Leney's birthday at the weekend - Happy Birthday both!

Happy Father's Day to all our wonderful dads and father figures!

The final Chapter this week coincides with a meeting I attended last night from SPFC (Smartphone Free Childhood) for all Headteachers in Hampshire.

I am pleased to say we are very much at the forefront with our actions so far and please keep signing up and stop your child using smartphones.

Chapter 12 Summary of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt

In Chapter 12 of The Anxious Generation, Jonathan Haidt focuses on what schools and communities can do to help reverse the rising tide of anxiety, depression, and social struggles among today’s youth. He emphasizes that the root of many of these issues is the shift from a play-based childhood to a phone-based childhood—a transition that has eroded in-person interaction, unstructured play, and the development of independence.

Haidt encourages schools to actively support policies that reduce smartphone use during school hours and instead promote activities that help kids build real-world social skills and resilience. He also discusses the importance of community norms—such as parents setting collective boundaries around technology use, encouraging outdoor free play, and delaying access to social media.

Key takeaways for parents:

  • Unstructured play is essential: Children need time away from screens to explore, take risks, and solve problems on their own.
  • Social media is not harmless: Early and unsupervised exposure can contribute to anxiety, especially in preteens.
  • School policies matter: Phone-free schools and structured digital literacy programs can help students thrive emotionally and academically.
  • Parents are not alone: Building a community of like-minded families makes it easier to set and maintain healthy tech boundaries.

The chapter closes with a call to action: parents, educators, and communities must work together to reclaim a healthier, more balanced childhood for this generation.

Let’s support one another in making these small but meaningful changes for the well-being of our children.
