Autumn 4                                          3 October 2025

Dear Parents/Carers

I wanted to share some wonderful moments from our school community this week. Our 'Grandparents Lunch' was absolutely fantastic - we've been running this event for 3 or 4 years now, and it's become incredibly popular. Just a heads up for next year: we'll be limiting it to one grandparent per pupil as it's quite tricky to organise.

A massive shout-out goes to Tamar and our incredible FOSS team, who raised over £20,000 for the school last year. What an achievement! Their AGM was held last night, and we're so grateful for their hard work and dedication. Please please lend a hand to them, they will always welcome new parents.

Tomorrow is Ground Force day - and I'll be honest, it looks like it might be a bit soggy! Despite the weather, this is a brilliant opportunity to get to know other parents while helping us spruce up the school garden. We'll be weeding, clearing, and sweeping from 10-12am, and , there will be bacon butties to keep us going. Bring the children along - they can play on the field while we work.

Looking ahead to next week, we've got quite a bit happening:

  • On Monday, selected pupils will attend the Year 6 quiz at Churchers College
  • Tuesday - Herons class will be visiting Fishbourne Roman Palace to support their learning and a Y3/4 cross country run at Bohunt.
  • We have parents' evenings scheduled:
    • Tuesday: Kingfishers class
    • Wednesday: Whole school
    • Thursday: All classes except Kingfishers

Apologies for the glitch in the booking system earlier in the week, please book as soon as possible to secure your place.

Also another apology, I didn’t get to let our Year 6 children know the results of the Head Pupil today as I had to cover a class all day. We will do it on Monday!

Running club is going well and for those keen runners of ours, we have 8 children running in the Sheet School Team on the Sunday!

Reminders:

Homework: I know it seems harsh to have homework at age 5, however starting homework at age 5 builds early discipline, strengthens memory, improves focus, nurtures responsibility, develops study habits, boosts confidence, encourages parental involvement, supports learning retention, fosters independence, and prepares children for future academic success!!!

School photography, Friday 3rd is the last day to order.

Busy, busy, busy…..

Network Rail - Crossing improvements

Please note the following dates the crossings will be shut as this will affect your journey to school if you come along Long Road.

  • Kingsfernsden Level crossing will be shut from Friday 3rd October to Friday 24th October.
  • Sheet Level Crossing will be shut from Friday 24th October to Friday 14th November

Attendance

As I continue to get to grips with the new Arbor system I can only show you the following graph for attendance.

Regular attendance in primary school is vital for a child's academic, social, and emotional development, establishing strong foundations for future success by building knowledge, fostering social skills, and instilling crucial life habits like responsibility and discipline.

Children who attend school consistently are more likely to achieve expected academic standards and develop well-rounded social and emotional skills.

It does make a difference to everyone in school that your child is in school every day.

Internet Safety

YouTube

YouTube is one of the most popular platforms, available across many different devices - phones, tablets and Smart TVS etc. YouTube is intended for users over the age of 13, however, younger children can still access YouTube with consent from a parent/ guardian. There are different options available to access YouTube, depending on your child’s age:

1. YouTube Kids –a separate app that includes a smaller selection of videos based on the age category you select: Preschool (ages 4 and under), Younger (ages 5–8) or Older (ages 9–12).

2. Supervised accounts – a parent-managed version of YouTube that allows you to control the content your child can access. You can select one of the following options:

  • Explore - Generally for viewers aged 9+.
  • Explore more - Generally for viewers aged 13+
        • Most of YouTube - This setting includes almost everything except for videos marked as 18+.

What do I need to be aware of?

Whilst YouTube can be educational and fun, it is important to be aware of the potential risks, such as:

  • Inappropriate content
  • Excessive Screentime – particularly due to the autoplay feature.
  • Unwanted contact / cyberbullying – particularly via comments if your child is sharing videos.
  • Algorithms – algorithms influence what we see to keep us engaged. This can lead to a user being exposed to large amounts of content about one topic/theme, which may not be helpful if it is negative.
  • Would you like to read this newsletter in a different language? You can use the translate tool on our web version:

Adverts that may not be aimed at or suitable for your child’s age.

What can I do?

  • Set up appropriate parental controls.
  • Show your child the reporting and blocking tools available.
  • Watch YouTube together or supervise use.

Library News ??

The children had their library sessions on Wednesday; for Reception it was their very first visit, and they were wonderful! They learnt the ropes and how to find their way around the library books.

As it was National Poetry Day this week, we read some poems: the younger children listened to "The Tri-Anti-Wonti-Gongalope" - ask them to say the name at home, they were brilliant at repeating it! Others learnt all about funny Couplet Poems, which made them giggle, see below for two of them! I've suggested they try to make some up at home!

These were my last library sessions with the classes; it has been an absolute privilege to be involved with the pupils' reading journey. Mrs Orme (mummy to Joseph Y5 & Rosie Y1) will be helping out in the library from time to time; the children have already given her a warm welcome!

So for now.... keep reading! ??‍????‍??

Couplets:

My dog ate my shoe, he's a silly old pup,

Now I have to hop everywhere 'til he coughs it back up! ??

The zoo trip was a huge success,

Until the monkey stole my dress! ??
