Autumn 5                                                     2 Oct 2026

Dear Parents and Carers

This Week

What a busy sporting week we have had!

We were delighted to field four teams for the annual football tournament at Bedales this week. On Wednesday, our Year 5/6 teams had great success, and on Thursday our Year 3/4 teams also represented Sheet brilliantly.

A huge thank you to Mrs M for the many hours she has spent training the children at school, as well as managing and supporting the teams on the tournament days. We simply couldn’t have done it without you – thank you! Thanks also to all the parents who came along to cheer the children on, and of course to the children themselves for their fantastic effort, teamwork, resilience and team spirit. We are very proud of you all.

On Thursday and Friday, we welcomed lots of very special visitors for our annual Infant Grandparents’ Lunches. This is always such a lovely event and it was wonderful to see the children enjoying lunch with their grandparents and sharing a little bit of school life with them.

We are also delighted to announce that CeCe and Theo have been chosen as our Head Girl and Head Boy for this year. A very well done to them both! We were incredibly impressed by all of the children who put themselves forward for these important roles. The candidates wrote some amazing letters of application and should all be very proud of the effort, thought and enthusiasm they put into them. It certainly wasn’t an easy decision!

Next Week

On Monday afternoon, Dom from the church will be joining us to lead our assembly.

There is another sporting opportunity too, this time for Years 3 and 4, who will be taking part in cross-country running at Bohunt! With the success and enthusiasm we have seen at Running Club, I am sure we will have plenty of keen runners ready to represent Sheet. Please make sure you sign your child up if you haven’t already.

Our Small Schools Teachers’ Group also meets next week. Teachers from the same year groups at Buriton, Steep, East Meon, West Meon and Langrish come together to share ideas and work collaboratively on projects specifically relevant to small schools. Sheet is hosting the first meeting, and I am sure our visitors will be interested to see some of our new ‘calm classroom’ ideas. These meetings are also a valuable opportunity for our teachers to plan, share expertise and contribute to teaching and learning across the year groups.

Meanwhile, Herons are busy drumming with Hampshire Music Service! These sessions are once again very kindly funded by our wonderful PTA, FOSS, and we are extremely grateful for their continued support.

Please also put Saturday 7 November firmly in your diaries for our biggest FOSS fundraiser of the year! If you are able to help in any way, please let us know. It is a huge logistical operation and every pair of hands really does make a difference.

A couple of reminders…

Please make sure that all school uniform is named. We already have quite a collection of lost property this term and, unfortunately, much of it has no name in it!

As the weather becomes colder and wetter, please also make sure your child brings a coat to school every day – or, even better, has one that can stay at school. We want to continue getting outside as much as possible throughout the autumn and winter. A bit of rain won’t stop us! Fresh air, outdoor play and exercise are all good for us.

And talking of getting outside…it’s Walktober! If you can, try parking a little further away from school and walking the final part of your journey, or encourage your child to walk, cycle or scoot to school. It helps children start the day actively and has the added bonus of reducing the traffic immediately around school.

Have a lovely weekend!

Internet Safety

Online Safety: Can You Believe What You See?

The online world is changing incredibly quickly, and one of the biggest changes for children is Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI is no longer something children only encounter through special apps. It can appear in search results, games, videos, social media and chatbots. It can create incredibly realistic photographs, voices and videos – sometimes showing something that never actually happened.

This means one of the most important online safety skills we can teach our children is simply to stop and ask:

“Is this real?”

Children need to understand that something looking convincing does not make it true. AI can give incorrect answers, create fake photographs and videos, imitate voices and produce information that sounds completely believable.

At home, try looking at online content together and asking:

• Who created this?
• How could we check whether it is true?
• Is another reliable source saying the same thing?
• Could this picture, voice or video have been created using AI?
• Should we share this with somebody else?

It is also important that children understand that an AI chatbot is not a friend or a trusted adult. They should never share personal information, photographs, their school, address or other private information with an AI tool.

The technology may be new, but the message we give children remains reassuringly simple: if something online worries, confuses or upsets you, stop and tell a trusted adult.

The best protection we can give our children isn't knowing everything about every new app – it is helping them become curious, questioning and confident enough to ask for help.
