Autumn 6                                                     9 Oct 2026

Dear Parents and Carers

This Week

What a brilliant week we've had at Sheet Primary, and I wanted to share some of the wonderful things that have been happening around school.

This week, our Year 3 and 4 pupils had the opportunity to take part in a cross country event at Bohunt, and I'm delighted to say they represented us brilliantly. Luna was the first girl over the line in the Year 4 race and William finished 8th – what an achievement and Jasper came 3rd in the Year 3 race. A huge well done to all three of them, and a massive thank you to the parents who came along to support and cheer them on. It really does make a difference when our families are there to celebrate these moments.

Our Herons have also been continuing with their drumming lessons, which are being funded by FOSS. It's wonderful to see them progressing so well with their music, they sound fabulous! Parents, look out for the music assembly so that the children can share this with you.

Something really exciting happened this week too. Staff from the other small schools in our cluster came to Sheet for their first year group meeting, and they were genuinely impressed with what they saw. The feedback about our new classroom designs, the flexible seating arrangements, the lighting, and the overall calm atmosphere was really positive. In fact, I think their visit has inspired them to make some changes in their own schools too. It's lovely when we can share what works well and help each other improve.

Your child's Christmas artwork should now be with you. If you'd like to take advantage of having your child's artwork made up into the various items that have been advertised, please remember that it needs to come back by 9am on Monday 19th. There's a wonderful selection of options available, so do have a look through what's on offer.

Next Week

Looking ahead to next week, we've got plenty going on. We're sending two teams to Churcher's College for the Year 6 quiz event – it's a great opportunity for our pupils to show off their knowledge and have some fun competing with other local schools.

The Scholastic book fair will be in school from Tuesday to Friday, so please do pop in after school if you can. It's a chance for the pupils to choose some books they'd like to read, and we receive a percentage of all sales which goes towards purchasing new books for the school. Everyone wins!

Our new parent tours for September 2027 are continuing, so if you know anyone who might be interested in joining our school community next year, do encourage them to get in touch and book a visit.

I wanted to remind everyone about lost property. We have quite a lot of sweatshirts and cardigans in the lost property box at the moment, but many of them don't have names on them, which means we can't reunite them with their owners. Please do check the box this week – there might be something that belongs to your child. Anything that remains unclaimed at the end of the week will be sent to second hand uniform.

As we're heading into the colder months, please make sure your child has a coat in school. We do go outside for play and learning whenever we can, so it's important they're prepared for the weather.

I'd also like to point you towards a new resource that might be helpful. Connect to Support Hampshire is a new first stop website for Hampshire parents, and it's packed with lots of helpful advice and guidance for local families. It's worth having a look at if you need any support or information - click here

Finally, you'll have received an attachment letter from PALS (Petersfield Area Schools) regarding smartphones in school. This confirms our commitment to this initiative, and we appreciate your support in helping us keep our school a focused learning environment.

Thank you all for your continued support of Sheet Primary.

Have a lovely weekend!

PALS Smartphone Free Child Movement - check out the attachment and useful links:

I'm really pleased to share something that's been close to our hearts here at Sheet Primary – our work as part of the Petersfield area schools to support the Smartphone Free Childhood movement.

Here's the thing: we're all trying to help our children enjoy childhood for a bit longer by delaying access to smartphones and social media. Now, when we talk about smartphones, we mean phones, smart watches and glasses that can access the internet. Basic mobile phones that just make calls and send texts? They're a different story altogether, and many families are finding them a brilliant alternative to stay in touch.

The research is pretty clear. Early smartphone access can expose children to cyberbullying, inappropriate content and real safeguarding risks. It also affects their concentration, sleep and wellbeing. But here's the encouraging bit – communities where parents work together to delay smartphone ownership actually see lower levels of mental health difficulties in children.

Across our Petersfield schools, we've been working on this together for years now. Pupils aren't allowed to bring smartphones to our junior or primary schools, and we actively encourage families to consider basic phones instead. As headteachers, we support parents who choose to delay smartphones until at least Year 9.

This genuinely works best when we do it together. By delaying smartphones as a community, we reduce pressure on our children and help create healthier experiences for everyone.

For more information, visit Smartphone Free Childhood, Delay Smartphones, Childnet Parents & Carers, or The Anxious Generation.

Our children's futures matter to all of us. Together, we can help them grow up safely and confidently.
