Autumn 5                                                 4 October 2024

Hello, Sheet Primary School community!

There's been so much going on, I hardly know where to start. But let's dive in, shall we?

First off, I want to give a big shout-out to Papaya for their brilliant presentation on smart phone use for young children. It was eye-opening stuff! If you missed it, don't worry - you can catch up by visiting their website at www.papayaparents.com/solutions. While you're at it, why not sign up for our school's parent pact? It's a great initiative, and you can find it at parentpact.smartphonefreechildhood.co.uk. Trust me, it's worth a look!

Our Year 6 pupils have been flexing their mental muscles this week. Eight of our Kestrels headed off to Churchers College for a fun quiz afternoon. Now, we might not have taken home the trophy, but our children had an absolute blast pitting their wits against others. It's not always about winning, is it? The experience and the fun are what really count.

Speaking of competitions, our Year 5/6 football team braved the rain for a tournament at Bohunt School on Tuesday. They faced off against five other teams, showing real grit and determination. A special mention goes out to Carter for some truly spectacular saves - well done!

Now, onto one of my favourite events of the year - our grandparents' lunches! It's been an absolute joy to see our infant pupils sharing a meal with their grandparents right here in school. The sense of community spirit was palpable, and it's no wonder this event is always such a hit. It's moments like these that really make our school special.

Our Herons class ventured out to Butser Farm today. I can't wait to hear all about their adventures - watch this space for more details next week!

Not to be outdone, Kestrels class took a trip to the church as part of their RE learning. It's always great to see our pupils engaging with the local community and broadening their understanding of different faiths.

Thank you to those who have changed your dropping off and parking habits, don't forget our poster competition is live, entries to school by 11th October - win ice-cream and get your posters put up outside the school!

Next week is our first parents evening of the year: please book via scholar pack Wednesday and Thursday, if children need to come, I am happy to entertain for your appointment time. Please note this is only a 10 minute appointment, if there is anything else you would like to talk about we have an open door policy and our teachers are happy to listen if you have any concerns that were not attended to at your appointment.

Phew! As I said, it's been a busy old week. But that's just how we like it here at Sheet Primary - full of learning, adventure, and community spirit. Until next time, keep being amazing!

Enjoy the weekend!

Year 6 football tournament at Bohunt
Brilliant football was played by our year 5/6s this week at Bohunt as part of our sports partnership weekly meetings.  They played against two teams from Liss Junior, two teams from Greatham and one team from Haslemere (Camelsdale). The boy put on a fabulous effort despite the wind and rain...

Internet Safety

There was a fabulous on-line presentation for parents this week. If you missed it you can find the slides here or on our website under online safety.

Thank you to those who attended the Smartphone Free meeting on Monday and those of you who have signed up to the parent pact. We have 40 children signed up! How many more can we get, sign up here, let's make the change our children deserve!

In February 2024, Ofcom, the online safety regulator, reported that:

  • 99% of  children spend time online.
  • nine in 10 children own a mobile phone by the time they reach the age of 11.
  • three-quarters of social media users aged between eight and 17 have their own account or profile on at least one of the large platforms.
  • despite most platforms having a minimum age of 13, six in 10 children aged 8 to 12 who use them are signed up with their own profile.
  • almost three-quarters of teenagers between age 13 and 17 have encountered one or more potential harms online.
  • three in five secondary school-aged children have been contacted online in a way that potentially made them feel uncomfortable.
  • there is a “blurred boundary between the lives children lead online and the ‘real world’”.

What is the Government doing?

To protect children, the Online Safety Act 2023 requires social media companies to (among other things):

  • remove illegal content quickly or prevent it from appearing in the first place – for example, child sexual abuse material and grooming.
  • prevent children from accessing harmful content – for example, content that encourages, promotes or provides instructions for suicide, self-harm and eating disorders; bullying and violent content.
  • use age age-checking measures so that children cannot access pornographic material and other and age-inappropriate content.

Game of the Week - Found it! by Mrs Beenham

We love it! Byron was given it for his birthday. You basically have to pick 4 cards with different criteria and have to hunt for something that matches as many clues  as possible. The different colours represent the level of difficulty. If you find something that fits 4 clues you move 4 spaces on the board etc. Really great fun for the whole family!

Headteacher Awards

Robins - Bonnie, Pia

Kingfishers - Rafferty, Kira

Herons - on school trip so no awards this week

Kestrels - Jeremy

*** FOSS ***

New Benches Arrive!!

***  Thanks to YOU! ***

Have you noticed something new in the school field? After a summer of incredible fundraising, we're thrilled to announce that FOSS has purchased three brand-new benches for the school! These benches are not just a place to sit—they’re a symbol of what we can achieve when we come together as a community.

A special thank you goes to Will Sammes for stepping up to assemble the benches, ensuring they’re ready for the children to enjoy. His hard work, and the generosity of everyone who supported our summer fundraising events, made this possible.

But this is just the beginning. With your continued help, we can fund even more projects to improve our school and create lasting memories for our kids. Whether you buy tickets, volunteer your time, or contribute in any way, your participation is key to making a difference.

We will discuss all of this and more at our AGM next Thursday 10th October (7-9pm in the Heron's classroom or via Teams). Please come along in person or online to vote in the Committee and find out about fundraising plans for the year ahead. Shaun (Treasurer) and Tamar (Chair) are standing again, if you'll have us! There are also vacancies for the roles of Vice Chair and Secretary. Do speak to us if you are interested. We can guarantee they are rewarding roles and genuinely not too onerous. Please RSVP via Classlist here so we know numbers  - we need 15 attendees to make it quorate.

Finally, our next event, the Fireworks Night, is just around the corner on 9th November - Join us and help make it another success! Please buy your tickets and sign up to volunteer on Classlist here.
