Spring 3                                               24 January 2025

Hello everyone,

What a busy and exciting time we've been having at Sheet Primary! There's so much to share with you all, so let's go.

Our Herons class have been making some wonderful noise lately - and I mean that in the best way possible! They've just had their second cornet lesson, and it's been an absolute joy to hear them learning how to make those first sounds. The excitement on their faces as they play is truly infectious!

Speaking of music, our Young Voices choir is buzzing with anticipation for their upcoming visit to the O2 Arena. It's going to be an incredible experience for them. A quick reminder to all our choir members: please keep practising those songs! Whether you're using YouTube or Spotify, make sure you're singing along to the Young Voices 2025 playlist. The more you practice, the more confident you'll feel on the big day!

Our Year 5 pupils have also been flexing their musical muscles. They've just attended their first Petersfield Music Festival rehearsal at Churchers College. It's always fantastic to see our pupils participating in these community events and representing Sheet Primary so well - wonderful behaviour and thanks to Mrs Wilby for accompanying me.

Now, for some important news. As you know, Mrs Child will be leaving us in April, and we're currently in the process of finding a new teacher to join our Sheet Primary family. Next week, we'll be conducting interviews to find the right person for the job. It's not going to be easy to replace Mrs Child, but I can assure you that the governors and I are committed to finding someone who'll be a great fit for our school.

On a practical note, we're running a bit low on tissues in school. If anyone has a box or two they could spare, we'd be incredibly grateful. It's amazing how quickly we go through them, especially at this time of year!

Lastly, I'm delighted to introduce Bethany Morris, who'll be joining us as a student teacher in Kestrels from 24th February until 4th April. We're looking forward to welcoming her to our school community and I'm sure you'll all make her feel right at home.

That's all for now, but as always, there's never a dull moment at Sheet Primary. Thank you all for your continued support and involvement in our school community. It's what makes Sheet Primary such a special place to be!

I wanted to change things around a bit this week. I have been reading 'The Anxious Generation' by Jonathan Haidt this week and will post a summary of each chapter.

Chapter 1:

"The Surge of Suffering" from The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, the author discusses the rising mental health challenges faced by younger generations, particularly Generation Z. Haidt explores the sharp increase in anxiety, depression, and self-harm among teenagers and young adults, highlighting how this surge began around 2012. He attributes this rise to a variety of factors, including the widespread use of smartphones and social media, which significantly impact mental well-being. Haidt also examines how societal shifts—such as changes in parenting, cultural dynamics, and the way young people interact with one another—have contributed to the surge in mental health issues.

He emphasizes the role of social comparison, cyberbullying, and the constant need for validation through likes and comments on social media platforms, which can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. Haidt argues that these platforms, while offering connection, often foster a sense of isolation and competition among youths. The chapter calls for a reassessment of societal trends and a more critical examination of how modern technologies and cultural changes may be contributing to the increasing suffering of younger generations.

Walk of the Week ....

So it’s the Year of the Coast, I thought it would be good to write a little about all the bits of Sussex coastline .

There is a Littlehampton coastal walk from the town’s harbour to Rushington. It’s a 3 km walk outward bound. It’s what I’d call an urban beach walk and it is completely flat.

The harbour is very pleasant, the children can do some crabbing, check out the long (234m) bench, check out the East Beach cafe, skate park, swim in the sea, see the dunes of West beach which allows dogs all year round.

Have fun!
