Spring 6                                                 14 February 2025

Hello everyone,

Happy Valentine's Day!

First up, Safer Internet Day - Our children dove deep into the world of online safety, exploring everything from spotting misleading adverts to understanding their digital footprints. It's heartening to see our young ones becoming savvy digital citizens, equipped with the knowledge to keep themselves safe in the online world. I have organized the presentation to parents for: Monday 10th March starting at 8pm. This is not suitable for children.

Meeting ID: 344 927 146 40 Passcode: dj95N3Ce

Some of our budding musicians had the opportunity to attend the annual Bedales small schools music day. What a treat! It's always a joy to see our pupils immersing themselves in these enriching experiences, and they certainly came back brimming with inspiration.

Our Year 5s have been pedalling their way to road safety this week with their bikeability lessons. They've been learning the ins and outs of cycling safely on our roads - an essential life skill that'll serve them well for years to come.

Speaking of life skills, our Year 6s got a taste of the performing arts with a trip to The Theatre Royal in Portsmouth today. They were treated to TPS's version of 'School of Rock' - I'm sure it will be a performance to remember!

Kestrels valentine themed cake sale raised £80 - well done and thank you for all the cake donations!

As we head into our well-deserved break, I want to remind everyone that we have an INSET day on Monday, 24th February. Our staff will be brushing up on fire safety and diving into our foundation curriculums to ensure we're providing the best possible education for our pupils.

When we return, we'll be welcoming Miss Morris back for her second placement on her SCITT programme with the Kestrels class. It's always exciting to have fresh perspectives in our classrooms!

We're also delighted to have a familiar face returning too - our former Head Girl, Evie Reah, will be joining the Herons class for her college work experience for the week. It's wonderful to see our past pupils continuing their journey in education.

Let's not forget our Kingfisher class, who'll be off on an adventure to Windsor Castle. I can't wait to hear all about their royal escapades!

Hampshire Healthy Steps are running a 6 session group programme at TPS starting on a Tuesday at 16.30 - 18.30pm for 6 weeks from March 4th. Book here:

Hampshire Healthy Steps offers families with 2- to 12-year-olds, support through a 6-session group programme. The programme offers families support and advice on eating well, getting active, sleeping well, healthy teeth, my community, and more in a relaxed and welcoming setting with their coaches. All groups are designed to be fun and interactive and to encourage children to get involved. Families can start the journey at any session in a flexible way that suits them, and we will ensure they are offered the 6 sessions.

Just a reminder to take part in the Henry Adams Competition over half term - to make a well-known book character using a recycled cardboard tube(s) along with other reclaimed materials and anything else you find at home.  Great prizes up for grabs and our EARA poster competition - a great project for a rainy day!

As we head into the break, I want to wish you all a brilliant week off. Stay safe, take care, and most importantly, have fun with your children! Make memories, laugh lots, and come back refreshed and ready for more learning adventures.

See you all soon!

The Anxious Generation Chapters 4 & 5

These chapters highlight the challenges posed by modern childhood experiences and underscore the need for societal and parental interventions to mitigate these harms.

Chapter 4: Puberty and the Blocked Transition to Adulthood

Haidt discusses the critical period of adolescence, emphasising the brain's significant changes during puberty, including pruning and myelination, which are essential for cognitive development. He argues that appropriate experiences during this time are crucial for shaping the adolescent brain effectively. However, he notes that overly protective environments, characterised by "safetyism," hinder children's ability to grow and develop independence, keeping them in a defensive mode and preventing the formation of secure attachments. Haidt concludes that children learn best in environments where they can engage in risky play, which both reinforces their resilience and shifts them into a mode of discovery. The absence of traditional rites of passage and the rise of safetyism deprive children of necessary growth experiences, nurturing anxiety instead.

Chapter 5: The Four Basic Harms

In this chapter, Haidt identifies four primary harms associated with the rise of screen-based childhood:

  1. Social Deprivation: The decline in face-to-face interactions amongst adolescents due to increased screen time has led to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Before smartphones, children engaged in real-world social activities essential for developing social skills. The shift to online interactions has reduced these opportunities, negatively impacting mental health.
  2. Sleep Deprivation: The constant presence of smartphones disrupts adolescents' natural sleep patterns, leading to insufficient sleep. Studies show a significant increase in sleep problems since the widespread adoption of smartphones. Insufficient sleep affects cognitive function, memory, reaction times, and overall mental health, leading to poorer academic performance and increased risk of accidents and illnesses.
  3. Attention Fragmentation: The constant notifications and multitasking associated with smartphone use fragment attention, making it difficult for adolescents to focus on tasks and leading to decreased academic performance. This fragmentation impairs the ability to engage in deep, sustained thinking and learning.
  4. Addiction: The design of many digital platforms encourages addictive behaviours, leading adolescents to spend excessive time on their devices. This addiction can interfere with daily responsibilities, social interactions, and overall well-being.

These chapters highlight the challenges posed by modern childhood experiences and underscore the need for societal and parental interventions to mitigate these harms.

School EARA Poster Competition

As part of the Sheet EARA (Equality And Rights Advocates) project, the EARA representatives have decided that the children can partake in a poster competition, one winner from each year group will have their poster put up on the school EARA board. You can hand them in to the school office via your class teacher in the first week back after half term. The posters have to be made on paper, however you can use a computer to look up information.

Have fun making your posters!
