Summer 4                                                      16 May 2025

Hello everyone!

Well SATs is a 'wrap' - the Year 6 children were utterly amazing at eating their big breakfasts each day, sitting in exam conditions and trying their best. They donned their home clothes on and their new leavers sweatshirts and were out of the door before I had time to pack the papers up! ;)

We had a wonderful celebration assembly this morning with such a lot of our children celebrated for many different reasons running, athletics, being kind, maths, writing & team work. It is really important to celebrate all of these different things and thank you to the parents who came in to see their children receive their certificate and appreciation.

Today we have been lucky enough to have a 'cricket engagement day' with 'Chance to Shine'. Vik the coach went out of his way to tell me how engaged and well behaved each year group was, what a lovely thing to hear.

Next week is Walk To School Week, our road safety ambassadors have talked through with the children in assembly this afternoon how important it is to try to start the day in an active way, so please try to walk, cycle, scoot or park and stride into school and back from next week!

On Tuesday our Junior girls are taking part in a girls football tournament, I cannot thank Mrs Mifsud enough for coming in to do training with the girls over various lunchtimes and accompanying me with them on Tuesday - what a star!

On Thursday we have a new event - a French Cafe!! Parents and any French speaking adults are invited to have a little nibble and refreshment in the hall, where the children will practise their French on them (1.45 - 2.45pm).

We have had a new shed delivered for our playground equipment - would a couple of parents be able to spare half an hour to put it up please? We have taken the old one away but the caretaker didn't have time to put the new one up!

Please can I remind you all to label your children's uniforms, we are getting so many unclaimed sweatshirts, cardigans, caps, water bottles it is a shame to start throwing it all away!

That's all for this week, hope that you enjoy the sunny weather this weekend.

The Anxious Generation Jonathan Haidt

Chapters 8 & 9 Summary

Chapter 8: Spiritual Elevation and Degradation

Haidt explores how the pervasive use of smartphones and social media has led to a decline in spiritual well-being, not just among adolescents but across society. He argues that digital interactions often replace practices that foster spiritual elevation, such as shared rituals, physical activities, stillness, self-transcendence, forgiveness, and awe in nature. These practices, which once connected individuals to a sense of meaning and community, are increasingly undermined by the distractions and superficial engagements of the digital world. Haidt highlights that this "spiritual degradation" contributes to feelings of emptiness and disconnection, particularly among younger generations.

Chapter 9: Preparing for Collective Action

In this chapter, Haidt emphasizes the need for collective action to address the mental health crisis exacerbated by smartphones and social media. He introduces the concept of "collective action problems," where individual decisions, such as allowing children to have smartphones, collectively lead to negative societal outcomes. Haidt suggests that coordinated efforts—such as community agreements, policy changes, and technological solutions—can help mitigate these issues. He advocates for measures like delaying smartphone access, implementing age verification for social media, and promoting policies that encourage healthier childhood experiences.

This is where so called 'collective action' by us here at Sheet will make this change, we are all in this together and we can see delaying smart phones is the most healthy and sensible action for us to take - but taking it collectively is a lot easier for parents and children alike!!
